SS 304 vs SS 201: Which Pipe Should You Buy?

Walk into any steel market in Pakistan and you will hear two numbers again and again: 304 and 201. Both shine, both are called "stainless", and both look identical on the shelf. The difference shows up months later — on your gate, your railing, your budget.

SS 304 contains roughly 8% nickel and 18% chromium. That nickel is what keeps the pipe rust-free in rain, humidity and outdoor exposure. It is the grade you want for main gates, balcony railings, outdoor grills and anything that faces weather.

SS 201 replaces most of that nickel with manganese. It costs noticeably less and shines just as bright on day one. Indoors — staircase railings, furniture, display racks — it performs beautifully for years. Outdoors, especially in humid cities, it can develop pitting and dull patches within a couple of seasons.

How to test what you are buying: a magnet sticks slightly to 201 more than to true 304, but the reliable check is a testing solution (acid test) that steel markets use — 304 shows no reaction, 201 turns dark. At TUBLO we tell you the grade upfront and welcome any test on delivery.

Rule of thumb: outdoor and wet areas — always 304 (or 316 near the coast). Indoor and dry — 201 saves you real money with zero visible difference.
